Join us on Thursday, August 14 from 7-8pm EST for this session on an excerpt from Neil Postman’s groundbreaking work, Amusing Ourselves to Death. This chapter, titled “The Peek-a-boo World”, aptly summarizes the arguments of his book about the damage done by the shift from the Age of Typography to the Age of Television. For a book written in 1985, Postman’s arguments about the dangers of political discourse becoming entertainment remain startingly accurate today.  His book gives us a critical framework through which to discuss the role of the modern-day media, not only through the lens of television, but also social media and streaming services. As we discuss Postman’s work, we will also consider how we can become more critical of the media we consume in order to avoid being seduced by endless entertainment.
