Join us on Thursdays from 7-8pm EST for a three-session series of discussions on Octavia Butler’s pivotal sci-fi work. The Parable of the Sower, set in California in the year 2025, is the story of Lauren, a young Black woman living in a world where societal institutions have collapsed and poverty, violence, drug abuse, and homelessness are steps away from the gated community in which she grows up. As she analyzes and observes the world around her, she develops Earthseed, her own religion in which “God is Change”. Ultimately, when her community is destroyed in a violent attack, she sets out on the road to create her own Earthseed community. We will discuss the nature of community, the power of religion, and what it means to care for others in a violent world. In order to reserve your spot, please click on the July 17th session and use the booking link provided.
