The Lathe of Heaven is a short novel (less than 200 pages) that tells the story of George Orr, a man whose dreams have the power to alter reality. Terrified of his own abilities, George seeks out Dr. Haber, a sleep psychiatrist who begins to use George’s powers to reshape the world. As we enter the new year, this story is perfect for discussing our personal responsibility to change world — and where this responsibility begins and ends. Do you agree with Dr. Haber, who asks George, “isn’t that man’s very purpose on earth — to do things, change things, run things, make a better world?” Or do you agree with George when he replies, “I don’t know if our life has a purpose and I don’t see that it matters.
