Join us on Wednesday, January 28th from 7-8:30pm to discuss this excerpt from The Brothers Karamazov by Fyodor Dostoevsky. This chapter, titled “The Grand Inquisitor”, summarizes the philosophical question Dostoevsky grapples with throughout the book: how can a just God allow for there to be suffering? In this narrative, Ivan tells his brother Alyosha the story of Jesus Christ returning to Earth during the Spanish Inquisition, where he is arrested by the Grand Inquisitor, a cardinal of the Church. This promises to be a powerful discussion about religion as a tool for oppression and what it means for humankind to truly have free will.
