Stay Engaged in Life-Long Learning
Read stories to open your mind to new worlds and develop empathy for experiences that differ from your own. Discuss those stories to clarify your ideas and gain new understandings. So often, our “lightbulb moment” comes when we listen, and another person’s idea sparks a realization within us.
Upcoming Virtual Sessions
“The 9 Billion Names of God” by Arthur Clark
Join me virtually on Monday, May 18th at 7pm EST to discuss the short story “The 9 Billion Names of God,” by Arthur Clark. In the story, a monastery requests the use of a supercomputer to help them in their mission to calculate all the possible 9-letter combinations that could create the name of God. To the alarm of technicians assigned to the project, the monks claim that when the supercomputer has finished its calculations, God’s purpose will have been achieved.

Giovanni’s Room by James Baldwin
Join me virtually on Monday, June 15th at 7pm EST (pride month!) to discuss the iconic queer novella Giovanni’s Room by James Baldwin. The novella begins in the 1950s as David, an American ex-pat living in France, thinks about his ex-fiancée Hella’s return trip to the United States, while his ex-lover, an Italian immigrant named Giovanni, is set to be executed in the morning. In our discussion, we’ll contrast the modern queer experience with Baldwin’s understanding from the 1950s — and reflect on the consequences of denying inner truths.
