SUMMARY:The Parable of the Sower (3-session course\, July 17\, 24\, 31)
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Thursdays from 7-8pm EST for a three-session series 
 of discussions on Octavia Butler’s pivotal sci-fi work. The Parable of t
 he Sower\, set in California in the year 2025\, is the story of Lauren\, a
  young Black woman living in a world where societal institutions have coll
 apsed and poverty\, violence\, drug abuse\, and homelessness are steps awa
 y from the gated community in which she grows up. As she analyzes and obse
 rves the world around her\, she develops Earthseed\, her own religion in w
 hich “God is Change”. Ultimately\, when her community is destroyed in 
 a violent attack\, she sets out on the road to create her own Earthseed co
 mmunity. We will discuss the nature of community\, the power of religion\,
  and what it means to care for others in a violent world. In order to rese
