SUMMARY:How We Treat Others: Story-Driven Dialogue for ages 10-13
DESCRIPTION:What does it mean to show kindness\, and why do we choose it? W
hen and why do we withhold our kindness? How do we justify the mistreatmen
t of others?\n\nIn this four-day literature course\, students explore how
we treat others through three short stories: “Thank you\, ma'am" by Lang
ston Hughes\, "The Lottery" by Shirley Jackson\, and "A Very Old Man With
Enormous Wings" by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. Each day’s 1-hour session in
vites students to read closely\, discuss deeply\, and write thoughtfully u
sing two core tools: a 6‑question reading framework (analyzing the narra
 tor\, characterization\, setting\, plot\, message\, and theme) and 4 writi
ng moves (summary\, claim\, evidence\, analysis).\n\nBy the end of the wee
k\, students will:\n\n Analyze the ways empathy and kindness (or the lack
thereof) shape our actions\n Strengthen their ability to support claims
with textual evidence\n Participate in a Socratic seminar exploring the c
onnections between texts and ideas\n Draft and refine a short essay with
 guided feedback\n
